The 7th BNBF British Championships were held on the 1st Oct 2006 in their spiritual hop, The University Theatre, George Square, Edinburgh. This year, 67 polygraphed athletes competed in a contest which was notable not only for its exceptionally high standard but also for the largest and most vociferous audience the event has yet attracted.
The judging panel consisted of Britain’s top professional Natural Bodybuilders, Rob Hope, Chris Nsubuga, Rachael Hayes, Brandon Greenwood and David Hannah who acted as head judge on this occasion. They were also joined by BNBF champ Campbell Brogan. They had an unenviable task with some incredibly tight decisions to make.
The show kicked of with the over 60’s
It is always an honour to have these athletes compete at the BNBF Britain, they are an inspiration to us all, providing an insight into what a natural bodybuilding lifestyle can do.
Over 60
1st David Brice
David was in great condition displaying good detail in his triceps, shoulders and back. David could improve his compulsories to show himself off even better.
2nd Eric Dowey
Eric even at 70 years young is still shapely and muscular, he poses well with a great stage presence.
3rd Ted Clifton
Ted has improved every year and this was no exception showing his best condition yet. Ted is always smiling and a crowd pleaser but could still improve his compulsory posing.
Masters
This was a very tight class the winner was stand out but the next places could not have been much closer.
1st Rick Waters
Rick was a stand out winner in this class bringing back the condition he had two years ago when he won this title. Rick is very aesthetic with great condition and full muscle bellies and had the best legs in the class by far and this sealed the win for him.
2nd Dave Reid
Dave had great arms and shoulders with a good rear double biceps. He still needs to work on his legs especially hams and glutes. Could have been a bit tighter but was good enough to take 2nd place on this occasion.
3rd George Kerr
George has a very wide back and broad shoulders with a great shoulder to waist taper. His legs are constantly improving and as usual displayed great condition. He presents himself well and his routines are very entertaining with the now famous head stand.
4th Charlie McKee
Charlie has a great upper body with very impressive shoulders, chest and arms. Charlie needs to work on leg development and detail. His presentation has improved vastly and if he continues to improve he will be a real threat in this class next year.
5th Denton Wilson
Denton is a real crowd pleaser with his entertaining routines and great facial expressions. Denton has a very pleasing upper body with a good sweep to his legs, but he lacks condition and detail in his legs.
6th John Chalmers
John was in good condition but not as tight as at the qualifier. He has good arms and a detailed back. John presents himself well especially in the compulsory poses.
Other competitors
Richard Abbott - Richard had good shape and is well balanced, but needs to be harder and pose better to pose any threat to the top places.
Grant Sullivan – Grant has a lot of muscle but is still hiding it under a lot of bodyfat. He poses well.
Junior
The junior class was a melting pot of raw talent and every competitor in this class has a real future in natural bodybuilding if they keep up the hard work. The juniors showed a lot of flare in the posing round with some well choreographed routines.
1st Abdul Miah
Abdul has a massive wide thickly muscled back and has an awesome sweep to his legs with great detail in his quads. Abdul has a fantastic X shape but being picky Abdul needs to work on his pec development and overall condition to complete the package.
2nd Andrew Chappell
Andrew was in great condition and has a very well muscular balanced physique. He is very confident on stage and smiled throughout the whole day. His tan was too pale especially during the day.
3rd Perri Mahmoud
Perri was in great condition, he has big sweeping quads and good arms but needs to work on back width and pec development. He presents himself very well.
4th Richie Hopper
Richie at 17 was the youngest competitor in the class and he displays awesome potential with a good X shape. He has a good sweep to his legs, wide back and although in good condition he could still be slightly harder.
5th Daniel Hanekom
Daniel has massive arms for a junior and used a lot of Arnolds classic poses to show them off. He did not show his legs at all which probably resulted in this low placing.
6th Anthony Rodreguez
Anthony has massive potential, great shape and is very aesthetic. He has a lot of muscle but needs to improve his condition. Anthony needs to work on his compulsory posing as he doesn’t show himself to his best.
Other competitors
Lee Bennett – Lee has great structure with wide shoulders and a tiny waist. He was slightly light on muscle but shows great potential for the future.
William Newton – William is a big made lad with a balanced shape who again shows potential for the future.
Igor Pogrebeshnny – Igor was in good condition and well balanced but needs to work on his legs.
Novice
The novice class was of a very high standard with all the competitors improving from their qualifiers. The top competitors were hard to separate.
1st Ben Scriven
Ben is an excellent novice with a wide back, big arms and a small waist. He displays great condition with a real hardness to his muscle. Ben has fantastically detailed and muscular legs but needs to work on pecs and Ben remember to tan your face.
2nd Tissot Regis
Tissot has a beautiful physique with full rounded muscle bellies and a great X shape. Tissot has a very muscular upper body with big arms, chest and shoulders. His back was thickly muscled and extremely well tapered. He needs to come in harder and get over his stage fright. Tissot’s legs were slightly lacking the detail of his upper body and that’s where he needs to do the work for next time.
3rd Tygoli Ano
Tygoli like Tissot has a well balanced physique with similar full muscle bellies. Tygoli has a good upper body with great abdominals. His legs had a good sweep to them but he did not tighten them to show any detail. Very entertaining posing routine but Tygoli will need to be tighter in the future..
4th Clive West
Clive was in good condition, he has a good shape with a wide back and small waist but he did not pose well enough to show his full potential. He was very alive on stage and seemed to really enjoy his day. A very entertaining routine.
5th David Bloch
David has good condition especially in the legs which had lots of detail. He has a balanced physique which could be improved with a bit more muscle and a bit more work on his compulsory posing.
6th Peter Samson
Peter was his usual entertaining self. The man in the mask was in his best condition to date. He has good arms and a detailed back but requires more width to his physique and needs to work on his legs. Compulsories could be better.
Others
Mark Claxton – Mark has a good shape and structure to build on, could be harder. Good potential and as he is only 22 has plenty time to improve his physique.
Philip Dean – Philip needs more muscle, he looked a bit thick waisted but this might be improved with better condition. Good legs.
Andrew McGlashan – Andrew was in great condition with good legs. He needs more muscle in his upper body.
Figure
The Miss Figure class has some very beautiful girls vying for this title. The girls really shone with great costumes, routines and very impressive figures.
1st Nicola Burrows
Nicola was a clear winner and epitomised what Miss Figure should look like. Nicola was muscular without being chunky and lean without being stringy. She has nice feminine lines with a well balanced and toned figure. Great presentation.
2nd Deborah Francis
Deborah is probably the one person who improved most from her qualifier. She was in good condition with a very striking stage presence. Deborah has learned a lot from her first outing in July and could be a future winner of this class.
3rd Lyn Thornton
Lyn has a tidy structure with good back shape and detail. She just needs to add a bit more muscle to her figure. Well presented package.
4th Wendy Newman
Wendy has a very good upper body with good pec and bicep development. Her waist looked a bit thick but this could have been the fact she was not in her best condition. Needs to work on lower body. Very attractive competitor.
5th Sheena Campbell
Sheena has improved considerably since her qualifier. She has a tiny waist and excellent condition but needs a bit more muscle to be competitive.
6th Trudy Wood
Trudy has a beautiful face and skin tone. She has a very shapely upper body but needs to bring the lower half in to match. Trudy has great stage presence and charisma.
Lightweight
This was probably one of the best lightweight line-ups I have ever seen. The quality of every physique was exceptional. Any of the top 5 could have been Britain winners on any other day.
1st Mick Battersby
Mick looked too big to be lightweight. He looked very muscular in the class with very full muscles and incredible condition. This was one competitor who got it right on the day. The only criticism would be of his routine which needs a bit more variety of poses. Mick won the Best Guns award for having the best arms in the competition.
2nd Iain Smith
Iain has a well balanced physique and was in great condition as always. Iain’s routine was excellent and well choreographed. Iain was beaten by the bigger fuller physique on the day. Iain won the Best Abs award and he really does have a very impressive midsection.
3rd Glen Danbury
Glen was tight and full with great condition especially in his back. Glen has these fabulous developed legs including massive calves and detailed hamstrings which won him the special Mike Williams Best Wheels award.
4th Jason Barnett
Jason was in excellent condition, very hard and dry. Jason has a very muscular back, great arms and very detailed legs. His routine was brilliantly executed. Just beaten by bigger men on the day.
5th Dave Pownall
Dave has great quads and massive wide shoulders tapering to a tiny waist. Very aesthetic and great potential for the future as this is only his first year in competition.
6th Phillip Bell
Phillip is a beautiful poser and has a very aesthetic physique. Philip has a massive wide back and well balanced shape. He could be slightly tighter and on this occasion his tan was too pale. If he works on these points could be a threat to the top placings
Others
Jose Ruiz – Jose was not in the condition he previously displayed at the qualifier. He is slightly taller than most of the lightweights and still needs to fill out his physique. He does show himself well in compulsories and has good chest development.
Tim Sharp – Tim has a good shape and good condition but could be a bit tighter. Very entertaining poser.
Denton Wilson - see masters
Middleweight
A large class with some top class physiques battling for this title, again providing some really tough decisions for the judges.
1st Mike Bell
This was the best I have ever seen Mike. He has always had a good balanced physique with small waist and broad shoulders and this year he finally delivered the goods. His condition emphasised his leg detail and great arms. A very balanced physique and a great poser.
2nd Kerry Napier
Kerry was probably the biggest in the class and carries a lot of mass. Kerry was tight and has a small waist and wide back but lacked detail in his midsection. Kerry looks great in side poses and his routine was the best I have seen him perform.
3rd Darren Vernon
Darren has great full muscle bellies with big arms and chest and a very detailed back. Could still be slightly tighter. Darren performed a very good routine.
4th Rob Riches
Rob was not as good as at the qualifier. Great physique from front and side with broad shoulders, small waist and excellent abs. Rob however is slightly weak from the back but shows huge potential for someone so young.
5th John Rafferty
John is excellent from the front with great quad separation and sweep. Weaker from the back and John seems to tighten his hamstrings. Excellent routine.
6th Tom Kepski
Tom is very aesthetic with a great shape. He could be tighter, is weak from back and needs to work on his hamstring. Good presentation.
Others
Rob Carey – Rob looked better than at the qualifier and was the best I had seen him with good detail in his legs and good shoulders. Unfortunately he was a bit light on muscle to compete with the others in this class.
Aris Vitovskis – Aris was not in the condition he had at the qualifier. Balanced but soft with good chest and shoulders.
Heavyweight
The heavyweights was the class everyone was waiting for, with some massive men in this class challenging for the top spot.
1st Alun Davies
Alun could not have been harder, he looked peeled. Alun has incredible detail in his back with shredded glutes and great hams. He has big arms and shoulder but is slightly weak in the pecs. Alun could improve his compulsory poses especially for the Pro ranks but he was a worthy winner in this class.
2nd Peter Chown
Pete was more balanced than in the past, and his upper body looked fuller improving his overall symmetry. However, this was to the detriment of his condition which could have been harder. His legs were big and sweeping as always. Pete was a very close second.
3rd Sam Bond
Sam entertained the crowd with his play on his he-man image. He has great detailed legs, big arms and full chest. Sam lacked a bit condition but at 22 has a big future in this sport. Sam was the winner of the best male presentation.
4th Jon Clark
Jon was softer than his qualifier showing but still displayed his massive upper body to its best. He has a wicked chest and tiny waist. Great poser.
5th Chris Cowan
Chris has a very balanced physique with big arms and a good sweep to his legs. He looks good in his side poses but needs to be tighter to be more competitive.
6th Sean Slaney
Sean is a big man with a lot of muscle but his physique does not flow as well as some of the others. Good condition but could work on his delts.
Miss Physique
This class was unique in that there were so many different shapes and sizes. The positive thing was that there was a lot of potential on display.
1st Jakki Law
Jakki has an excellent shape, broad wide back and shoulders tapering to a tiny waist, very neat hips and a good sweep to her thighs. She has good chest and arms but needs more detail and condition in her legs especially glutes and hams. Good posing routine which showed her shape well.
2nd Marina Cornwall
Marina was in her usual great condition, she has very detailed legs and back and a muscular chest and arms. Marina lacks shoulder width and a certain flare to her physique. Great presentation as always.
3rd Alex Fowler
Alex is very shapely with good arms and toned legs but is a bit heavy in the glutes. Great stage presence and unique routine, just needs better condition. Alex also won best presentation for her posing tan and routine.
4th Lyn Sneddon
Lyn was the best I have seen her. The most muscular in the class but still needs to improve her condition. Lyn’s routine was my favourite of the night and very entertaining, however she could work on her compulsory poses. Better compulsories and a little tighter yet would make a massive difference.
5th Lesley Haswell
Lesley was tighter than at her qualifier but still need to be harder yet. Good shape with great back width and small waist. Very charismatic and good potential.
6th Mandy Grace
Mandy was in good condition and presented herself well. Mandy looked a bit depleted which made her look a bit flat. She was harder from the front than the rear. She performed a very entertaining routine.
Others
Crow Dillon-Parkin – Crow has a good upper body with good bicep and pec development, however on this occasion her lower body was weak and needed to be tighter.
Lucy Smith – Lucy always does fabulous posing routines. Her physique keeps improving
and her legs were tighter, Lucy needs more back width and she looked bloated in the midsection.
